Compound Clause:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>A compound sentence consists of 2 or 3 clauses. It is when simple sentences are joined together.<\/p>\n<p>In this sentence structure, the clauses are joined with the following\u00a0<strong>coordinating conjunctions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>F\u00a0= for<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0= and<\/p>\n<p>N\u00a0= nor<\/p>\n<p>B\u00a0= but<\/p>\n<p>O\u00a0= or<\/p>\n<p>Y\u00a0= yet<\/p>\n<p>S\u00a0= so<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8216;fanboys&#8217; is an easy way to remember the different conjuntions that make up compound sentences. Obviously the most common are &#8216;and&#8217;, &#8216;but&#8217;, &#8216;or&#8217; and &#8216;so&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of compound sentence structure:<\/p>\n<p>Computers\u00a0are\u00a0important,\u00a0but\u00a0they can be\u00a0dangerous too.<\/p>\n<p>Formula = SV but SV<\/p>\n<p>Computers\u00a0are\u00a0important,\u00a0butthey can be\u00a0dangerous too,\u00a0sowemust be\u00a0careful.<\/p>\n<p>Formula = SV but SV so SV.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid writing too many clauses as the sentence may get difficult to follow, and you\u00a0<strong>cannot<\/strong>\u00a0use each one\u00a0<strong>more than once<\/strong>\u00a0in a sentence to join clauses.<\/p>\n<p>This is\u00a0<strong>wrong<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Computers are used widely in most countries now,<strong><span class=\"r\">\u00a0and<\/span><\/strong>they are a sign of progress,\u00a0<strong><span class=\"r\">and<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0we must ensure everyones has access to them.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect formula = SV and SV and SV.\u00a0<strong class=\"r\">X<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two possible corrected versions:<\/p>\n<p>Computers are used widely in most countries now,<strong><span class=\"r\">\u00a0and<\/span><\/strong>they are a sign of progress. SV.<\/p>\n<p>Computers are used widely in most countries now,<strong><span class=\"r\">\u00a0and<\/span><\/strong>they are a sign of progress,\u00a0<span class=\"r\"><strong>so<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0must ensure everyones has access to them.<\/p>\n<p>Formula = SV and SV so SV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using semicolons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is an instance when you can have a compound sentence structure without a coordinating conjuntion, and this is when you join two clauses with a semicolon. It is used when two ideas are related.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p>Computers are used widely in most countires; they are a sign of progress.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\">02. Complex Clause:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Complex sentences are more complicated (which is maybe why they are called &#8216;complex&#8217;!).<\/p>\n<p>This type of sentence structure is important for IELTS because to get awarded a band 6 or higher for your &#8216;grammatical range and accuracy&#8217;, you need to demonstrate that you are able to use them.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>more varied<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>more accurate<\/strong>\u00a0your complex sentences are, the higher the band score for this.<\/p>\n<p>There are different types of complex sentences and these will be looked at in more detail later, so here you are just provided with the basics.<\/p>\n<p>Complex sentences are two (or more) clauses joined together, but they are not joined by &#8216;fanboys&#8217; (coordinating conjuntions). They are joined by subordinating conjuntions.<\/p>\n<p>These are subordinating conjunctions:<\/p>\n<p><em>after<br \/>\n<\/em><em>although<br \/>\n<\/em><em>as<br \/>\n<\/em><em>as if<br \/>\n<\/em><em>as long as<br \/>\n<\/em><em>as much as<br \/>\n<\/em><em>as soon as<br \/>\n<\/em><em>as though<br \/>\n<\/em><em>because<br \/>\n<\/em><em>before<br \/>\n<\/em><em>even if<br \/>\n<\/em><em>even though<br \/>\n<\/em><em>if<br \/>\n<\/em><em>in order to<br \/>\n<\/em><em>in case<br \/>\n<\/em><em>once<br \/>\n<\/em><em>since<br \/>\n<\/em><em>so that<br \/>\n<\/em><em>that<br \/>\n<\/em><em>though<br \/>\n<\/em><em>unless<br \/>\n<\/em><em>until<br \/>\n<\/em><em>when<br \/>\n<\/em><em>whenever<br \/>\n<\/em><em>whereas<br \/>\n<\/em><em>where<br \/>\n<\/em><em>wherever<br \/>\n<\/em><em>while<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p>People take natural health supplements\u00a0<strong><span class=\"r\">even though<\/span><\/strong>they may not have been tested.<\/p>\n<p>Our children may not be properly educated\u00a0<strong><span class=\"r\">if<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0we don&#8217;t spend more on schools.<\/p>\n<p>I went to bed\u00a0<strong><span class=\"r\">as soon as<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0he left\u00a0<strong><span class=\"r\">because<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0I was tired.<\/p>\n<p>These are all\u00a0<strong>adverbial clauses<\/strong>. In these types of complex sentence, the second clause can be used to start the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, a comma is needed in the middle.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"r\">Even though<\/span>\u00a0they may not have been tested, people take natural health supplements.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"r\">If<\/span>\u00a0we don&#8217;t spend more on schools, our children may not be properly educated.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"r\">As soon as<\/span>\u00a0he left, I went to bed\u00a0<span class=\"r\">because<\/span>\u00a0I was tired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noun clauses<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>relative clauses<\/strong>\u00a0are also a type of complex sentence structure, but these will be looked at later.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\">03. Compound-Complex Clause:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Compound-complex sentences are the same as complex sentences but they also have a simple (or compound) sentence before or after the &#8216;complex&#8217; part.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p><u>I ate a lot\u00a0<strong class=\"r\">when<\/strong>\u00a0I got home<\/u>,\u00a0<strong><span class=\"r\">but<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0I was still hungry.<\/p>\n<p>The part that is underlined is the complex sentence. As you can see, it also has a simple sentences connected to it.
