There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. &#8230; The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Purpose of the test:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The IELTS Listening test is designed to assess a wide range of listening skills, including how well you<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>understand main ideas and specific factual information<\/li>\n<li>recognise the opinions, attitudes and purpose of a speaker<\/li>\n<li>follow the development of an argument<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Timing:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The IELTS Listening test takes approximately 30 minutes, and you are allowed an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers from your question booklet to your answer sheet.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Four sections:<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The IELTS Listening test is broken down into four sections:<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 319px;\" border=\"0\" width=\"49\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\" align=\"center\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 75px;\" scope=\"col\">Section<\/th>\n<th style=\"width: 734px;\" scope=\"col\">Description<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 75px;\">1<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 734px;\">You listen to a conversation between two people set in an everyday social situation, e.g. a conversation in an accommodation agency, and answer questions on your comprehension.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 75px;\">2<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 734px;\">You listen to a monologue set in an everyday social situation, e.g. a speech about local facilities or a talk about the arrangements for meals during a conference.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 75px;\">3<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 734px;\">You listen to a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment, or a group of students planning a research project.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 75px;\">4<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 734px;\">You listen to a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>You will begin by listening to a recording of instructions and a sample question for section 1. Then you will read the questions for section 1, listen to section 1, and answer the questions.<\/p>\n<p>This procedure is repeated for sections 2, 3 and 4.<\/p>\n<p>In the final 10 minutes, you will transfer your answers onto the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/takeielts.britishcouncil.org\/prepare-your-test\/understand-test-format\/listening-test\/example-listening-test-answer-sheet\">answer sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each section is heard once only.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Questions:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>There are 40 questions.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of question types is used, and you may be asked to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>answer multiple choice questions<\/li>\n<li>label a plan, map or diagram<\/li>\n<li>fill in a form<\/li>\n<li>complete a table<\/li>\n<li>complete a flow-chart<\/li>\n<li>give short answers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Marking:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Each correct answer receives one mark.<\/p>\n<p>Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Scores are reported in whole and half bands.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SkzW5LgKykM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"preprend-title\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Listening test advice:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Follow this Listening test advice, and make sure you understand how to respond to &#8216;completion&#8217; type questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You will be given time to read through the questions before you listen. You will hear each recording of the Listening test only once.<\/p>\n<p>As you listen, write your answers on the question paper. At the end of the test, you will have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the\u00a0<a title=\"sample Listening test answer sheet\" href=\"https:\/\/takeielts.britishcouncil.org\/prepare-your-test\/understand-test-format\/listening-test\/example-listening-test-answer-sheet\" target=\"_self\">answer sheet<\/a>\u00a0in pencil. You may write your answers in lower case or capital letters.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential that you transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
