IELTS Introduction

IELTS Introduction | What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS™, is an international standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, and was established in 1989. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million tests taken in the last year. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9). By taking an IELTS test, you will receive a test report that is recognised and accepted by thousands of institutions around the world, including companies, universities, professional bodies, and government agencies. You will improve your English language skills. Some students tend to favour certain skills over others.

How does IELTS work?

IELTS has been developed by some of the world’s leading language assessment experts and will test the full range of English skills needed for success in your new job or study placement abroad. You’ll be assessed on the following elements:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

The test is designed to reflect the sort of language spoken every day in an English-speaking country and even covers variations such as British English, American and Australian English.

Part of the assessment is a real-life conversation that will allow you to communicate effectively with English speakers across the globe.
